A Letter from Joan Sauer:

My name is Joan Sauer and mental illness has affected me in a very profound way. In 2004, I lost my son, Tommy, at the age of 23 to suicide caused by mental illness. Tommy suffered from schizoaffective disorder, a condition that caused him to suffer from periods of severe depression and manic symptoms as well as hallucinations throughout his life.

But Tommy was more than his mental illness. He was a bright young man with a wonderful sense of humor who loved music. Tommy had lots of friends because he accepted everyone and judged no one, unlike the judgement that still exists today about people with mental illness.

My goal is to honor my son in a positive way. This pendant will help us to raise awareness and reduce the stigma that surrounds these disorders. Funds raised from this project will create a voice for those affected by mental illness. Thank you for helping me educate and advocate for families by being a part of this very special effort to Make A Difference!
